This week Jessica (Confessions of a Bookaholic) and I have shared with you our interview with Partials author Dan Wells and some of our favorite quotes from the book. Today we are doing an open discussion of the book where we share some of our thoughts and give readers a chance to join in and link up their review of Partials.

Discussion for Partials

Okay, my first thought when thinking of Partials is just how well it was written and how outstanding the characters were. Who was your favorite?

I agree that Partials was written amazingly. It was easy to grow attached to the characters and I think my favorite would have to be Kira, following by a tie between Marcus and Samm. Kira was incredibly smart and I liked how Well's took the time to let her work through her thoughts and figure things out. She's really strong too and to me that always makes a fantastic female lead. Marcus, he was a crack up! I think he had some of the best lines throughout the story and then Samm, he was a shocking surprise and yet still a huge mystery that I can't wait to learn more about in the next book. What about you, who was your favorite and why?
I agree 100%. Kira was amazing and I think it was wonderful how SMART she was. She didn't need anyone to show her the way, she really took charge. Marcus cracked me up. A lot of the book was focused around serious issues and his lines really created a nice distraction for a while. Samm was very surprising! One of my favorite things about this book was simply looking forward to Samm's moments to see what could be discovered from what he said. What did you think about the science part of the story?
To be honest, I was someone worried that the science part of the story would take over, but was happy that the writing made that part of the story fit in nicely and never took away from anything. That's the thing about Partials. There's so much in the story from various different genres that gave this book an amazing twist. In the end, I liked the science part of things. I wanted to see Kira work her way through things, to figure out the puzzle pieces before her. The science part of things really gave me a better chance to see just what a smart cookie she really is. The new "government" in Partials is written somewhat as a whole other character. What did you think of their choices for the people?
Very true. I was honestly worried I would be confused by the science part but it really grabbed my attention quick. It was nice to read a dystopian novel where we know exactly what happened to the humans. Many times that is overlooked. Partials is really a book that has a little bit of everything and that's one of the reasons why I think I enjoyed it so much. Now, as for the government and their choices, on one hand I can see why they worried so much about the people rebelling against them. Not many people were left and they needed order, but it was obvious that the pregnancy age was the biggest factor for the people (as it should have been). Their ideas weren't working so I think it was time for some new choices to be made but I couldn't help but feel bad for the adults in this book because they had literally lost everything.
The government was someone out of control. I cringed at the choices and laws they made for the world. I hated the control they had over everyone. Really, there were no choices left for a free person to make. The government did it all for you. I mean, I understand the need for humanity to continue, and the RM virus made that hard to do, but the control over people was just maddening!

In the end, I LOVED Partials. It's one of the best books I've read in 2012 and I am in serious need for the sequel - Fragments in 2013. I really couldn't find anything that I didn't like about this title and I hope more people will pick this one up and fall in love just as much as I did.

Definitely! I had heard amazing things about it but it really blew me away.  I can't wait for book 2 to see what happens to these characters next!

Hello again! It's time for another post for this months Blogger Talk! Jessica (Confessions of a Bookaholic) and I, along with Dan have put together some of our favorite quotes from the book. Check them out and see what you guys think. We'd love to hear your comments!

Title: Partials (Partials, #1)
Author: Dan Wells
Publisher: Balzer + Bray, 472 Pages (February 28th, 2012)
Add Partials to: Goodreads
Order Here: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, The Book Depository

Synopsis: Humanity is all but extinguished after a war with partials—engineered organic beings identical to humans—has decimated the world’s population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island. The threat of the partials is still imminent, but, worse, no baby has been born immune to the disease in over a decade. Humanity’s time is running out.

When sixteen-year-old Kira learns of her best friend’s pregnancy, she’s determined to find a solution. Then one rash decision forces Kira to flee her community with the unlikeliest of allies. As she tries desperately to save what is left of her race, she discovers that the survival of both humans and partials rests in her attempts to answer questions of the war’s origin that she never knew to ask.

Quotes from Partials:

Top 5 Favorite Quotes of Dan's -

Owen Tovar: "War, see, is when two sides fight, maybe not evenly, but at least they both get a few swings in. What we call the Partial War was mankind getting mugged in an alley."

Duna Mkele: "Let us assume, just for the moment, that whatever the Partials are planning is larger in scope than the murder of one teenage girl."

Nandita Merchant: "Each life has a different purpose, and some people can find their purpose more easily than others. The key, the most important thing you can ever know, is that whatever your purpose is, that's not your only choice."

Kira: "I don't know if 'we're stupider than they think we are' is a really great attack strategy."

Isolde: "If you can't know the truth, live the most awesome lie you can think of."

A Couple of My Favorite Quotes -

"So tell us about yourself," said Marcus, settling into a couch. "If I'm going to spend the while night waiting for you guys to stop flirting and shoot each other, I want to at least be entertained." -- page 54 (Marcus)

"Just bring something to share this time," sad Kira, turning back to Marcus and tapping him pointedly in the chest. "I'm not covering for you like last time."
"That was a one-time thing," said Marcus, laughing, "and it wasn't last time, it was four times ago, and I've covered your share way more than that."
"I'm just saying," said Kira, picking him again in the chest, "I don't want my food-for-nothing, freeloader boyfriend to make me look bad in front of everybody. Again." She poked him one last time, glared at him playfully, then poked him again for good measure.
"Do you poke all the boys, or I am Special?"
She leaned closer. "It's just you." She kissing him on the cheek. "Until somebody better comes along." -- page 76 (Kira and Marcus)

"Wake up sleepyhead," said Kira, bumping Marcus's ear with her shoulder. "We're almost home."
"I didn't order sushi."
"What?"
Marcus opened his eyes warily. "What did I say?"
"Nothing I have to smack you for. You're lucky you were dreaming about food instead of girls."
"I'm male," said Marcus, rubbing his eyes. "It was a fifty-fifty shot." -- page 73 (Kira and Marcus)

"Well, thanks for not shooting anyone, I guess" said Marcus. "My contribution was to somehow refrain from peeing myself. You can thank me later." -- page 347 (Marcus)

A Couple of Jessica's Favorite Quotes -

"No matter how they spun it, no matter how much they tried to focus on the positives, the ugly truth was that there simply weren't any children anymore. They were closing the school because they had run out of students. The teachers had done their job, but the doctors hadn't. -- page 12 (Kira)

"I've never been this wet in my entire life," said Kira. "Even immersed in a bathtub I swear I was dryer than I am now."
"Look on the bright side," said Marcus.
Kira waited.
"This is the point," she said, "at which you would traditionally suggest a bright side."
"I've never been a real traditional guy," said Marcus. "Besides, I'm not saying I know a bright side, I just think this would be a great time to look at one." -- page 45 (Kira and Marcus)

It looks like this month Jessica and I managed to have one of our favorite quotes be the same. And I think it's telling that most of our quotes have Marcus in them. He was very entertaining to say the least. Also, the quote of Dan's from Isolde was one I almost used as well. That scene was a good one.

*Note: The quotes from Jessica are from a finished copy and the quotes from me are from an ARC copy.

Torn between Promises One and Three, Shelby makes a decision -- to exploit a loophole and lose her virginity before taking the vow. Hello everyone... it's time for another post for our second month of Blogger Talk, Novel Exposed!! Today we have a exciting and very different, yet fun interview with Partials author, Dan Wells. We hope you'll enjoy it, as much as we have.

A quick message: Jessica (Confessions of a Bookaholic) and I would love to thank everyone who participated in last months discussion. We're still working out the kinks of this new feature for both of our blogs, but we believe it's been a great addition for each of us. We hope you guys will continue along with us for the journey as we bring you new and exciting books and authors each month.

As she tries desperately to save what is left of her race, she discovers that the survival of both humans and partials rests in her attempts to answer questions of the war’s origin that she never knew to ask.

Top 5 Interview:

1. Give us 5 words you would use to describe Kira?

Smart, Brave, Reckless, Temperamental, Determined

2. 5 words you would use to describe the "world" we see in Partials?

Decaying, Empty, Overgrown, Dangerous, Waiting

3. Tell us 5 ways we would know someone is a Partial?

1-They're stronger, faster, and tougher than a human.
2-They're trained in battle.
3-They heal at a superhuman rate.
4-They can communicate silently with other Partials, which also means:
5-You can tell someone's a Partial if you are a Partial yourself

4. The 5 major survival skills humans would need in order to stay safe.

1-Stay away from old houses; most of them lack steel construction and could collapse if you're not careful.
2-You can find water almost everywhere, but make sure you purify it first. The Old World put a lot of scary chemicals into the soil.
3-Most canned food is still good, so you can find food almost anywhere (but watch out for cans that are bloated or swollen--they've gone bad).
4-Stay away from Partials at all costs.
5-Partials aren't the only bad guys. Wild animals have reclaimed most of the planet, and unscrupulous humans might be the most dangerous threats of all.

5. What are 5 symptoms of the RM virus?

1-Intense fever.
2-Loss of bodily fluids (mucus, urine, sweat), and with that the threat of dehydration.
3-Hallucinations.
4-Loss of muscular control.
5-Destruction of the immune system.

Thanks so much for taking the time out of your busy touring schedule to stop by today and be part of this months Blogger Talk. It was great to have you here, you're more than welcome anytime and we're looking forward to having you stop by again later this week when we share some favorite quotes with everyone.

Title: Partials (Partials, #1)
Author: Dan Wells
Publisher: Balzer + Bray, 472 Pages (February 28th, 2012)
From: Publisher
Format: ARC

Synopsis: Humanity is all but extinguished after a war with partials—engineered organic beings identical to humans—has decimated the world’s population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island. As she tries desperately to save what is left of her race, she discovers that the survival of both humans and partials rests in her attempts to answer questions of the war’s origin that she never knew to ask.

Review: 5 Stars - Partials By Dan Wells is one of those titles that’ll be hard for me to find the words to express how much I loved the story and characters. It’s always amazing when a book makes you totally lose yourself to the point where you feel like you’re walking through the pages, right alongside the characters. You can picture the landscape and breathe the scent in the air – Partials did that for me.

With humanity on the brink of extension after a war that knocked out most of human life, a small society is set out to try to rebuild it. Sadly the RM virus spread and few were immune. No baby has been born and doctors and scientist have been trying to find a cure for eleven years. Women and girls are forced at an age the new government has deemed appropriate to have babies in hopes that a new generation will be born and survive to repopulate the world.  Many of these woman and girls believe it’s their duty to have babies to do their part in hopes of helping to make a new generation that’ll repopulate the world.

Sounds pretty grim, right? In the fantastic dystopian/post-apocalyptic world that Well’s has created, it is. Yet there’s hope, all down to our female protagonist – Kira. She’s a voice of strength, reason and is highly intelligent. She fights for what’s right, questions what she thinks is wrong, keeps her mouth shut when she needs to in order  to survive and is incredibly gutsy and in so many ways and on so many levels – Fearless. I loved watching her figure things out, to listen to her talk things through as she came to her conclusions.

The book has a lot of science in it when it comes to the “Partials” and the RM virus, and I found myself utterly immersed in the fascinating story Well’s has weaved. Since I mentioned Partials, I figured I should talk about these super humans a bit. Well, they look just like humans, but they aren’t. They were created by the government to be a super weapon to fight in a war. When the war ended they were shunned and in the end rebelled against humans and another war started, the RM virus was released and the world pretty much died - humans along with it.

Kira see’s more and more what’s happening and thinks she’s found a way to cure RM, it’s risky yet she knows she needs to do whatever she can to help save the human race, and her rights to not be forced into having babies. She has an amazing group of friends who stand alongside her and fight for what they believe in as they venture beyond the island, far away from the city and deep into a dangerous territory in hopes of finding what Kira thinks will be the antidote to the RM virus. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this group of teens band together to fight for what’s right. Some of them going against what they believe in, yet believing in Kira enough to follow her anyway.

Now, I won’t tell you anything more about this thrilling, gasp inducing story, other than you seriously need to read this book. It’s full of action, shocking secrets, betrayal, romance and so much more that I’m lost for words.

Part dystopian, post apocalyptic and science fiction, Well’s blended the three together extremely well and has written a book that is one of my favorites of 2012. Characters that are utterly captivating and a story you won’t be able to put down. Partials is one of those must read titles that sticks with you long after reading and you’ll be more than ready to read again to help bridge the gap in the long wait until book 2 – Fragments is released in 2013. Yep, a long, long wait. Enjoy!

Review: Never Eighteen By: Megan Bostic

Title: Never Eighteen
Author: Megan Bostic
Publisher: HMH Children's Books, 204 Pages (January 17th, 2012)
From: the publisher & Amazon Vine
Format: ARC

Synopsis: I had the dream again. The one where I’m running. I don’t know what from or where to, but I’m scared, terrified really.

Austin Parker is never going to see his eighteenth birthday. At the rate he’s going, he probably won’t even see the end of the year. But in the short time he has left there’s one thing he can do: He can try to help the people he loves live—even though he never will.

It’s probably hopeless.

But he has to try.

Review: 3 Stars - Never Eighteen By: author Megan Bostic was a must read from the first time I read the synopsis! Which was at least a year ago. It’s a contemporary story about life, chances and what each person chooses to do with the life they lead and the time they have.

Austin, our male lead is sick. He has cancer and he knows he’s not going to make it to his eighteenth birthday. He wants to use the time he has left to try to help the people around him. To make them see that while he doesn’t have a chance to lead a full life, that they… the people he loves still have a chance to find happiness, to live their lives more than they are right now.

So, he sets out on a journey with his best friend over the course of a weekend, while he’s still feeling good, like himself. With Kaylee by his side and driving him around in her car - with the ever changing name – he sets out to visit friends and family.

Speaking of Austin and Kaylee, they’ve known and been best friends with each other forever. Austin has stronger feelings for Kaylee and throughout the story we see him fight with the idea of telling her before it’s too late, yet at the same time he knows that if she doesn’t feel the same way it might ruin what little time they have left and if she does feel the same way it’ll hurt her more because of what he’s getting ready to face.

While this was an extremely quick read and I enjoyed Bostic’s writing and story, I wish there would have been a bit more to it. I didn’t feel that I had much of a chance to get to know who Austin and Kaylee really were or to better understand their back story and relationship. Yet I understand that’s not really the point of the story, however, it’s always nice to better understand the characters you’re trying to connect with.

All in all, it was a contemporary novel I was very much looking forward to and enjoyed, but was hoping for a bit more. It was touching and emotional and I would recommend this title to those who are looking for a contemporary with heart and a strong message.

"Waiting On" Wednesday is an event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. The purpose of this weekly event is to spotlight a soon-to-be-released book that you are very much anticipating. "Waiting On" Wednesday will also give bloggers an opportunity to share ideas for our TBR lists.

Title: Unraveling
Author: Elizabeth Norris
Publisher: Balzer + Bray, 445 Pages (April 24th, 2012)
Pre-order here: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, The Book Depository

Synopsis: Two days before the start of her junior year, seventeen-year-old Janelle Tenner is hit by a pickup truck and killed—as in blinding light, scenes of her life flashing before her, and then nothing. Except the next thing she knows, she's opening her eyes to find Ben Michaels, a loner from her high school whom Janelle has never talked to, leaning over her. And even though it isn't possible, she knows—with every fiber of her being—that Ben has somehow brought her back to life.

But her revival, and Ben's possible role in it, is only the first of the puzzles that Janelle must solve. While snooping in her FBI agent father's files for clues about her accident, she uncovers a clock that seems to be counting down to something—but to what? And when someone close to Janelle is killed, she can no longer deny what's right in front of her: Everything that's happened—the accident, the murder, the countdown clock, Ben's sudden appearance in her life—points to the end of life as she knows it. And as the clock ticks down, she realizes that if she wants to put a stop to the end of the world, she's going to need to uncover Ben's secrets—and keep from falling in love with him in the process.

From debut author Elizabeth Norris comes this shattering novel of one girl's fight to save herself, her world, and the boy she never saw coming.

And then, in a frightening attack, a zombie delivers a letter to Eleanor…from her brother.

Whoever is controlling the Dead army has taken her brother as well. If Eleanor is going to find him, she’ll have to venture into the lab of the notorious Spirit-Hunters, who protect the city from supernatural forces. But when his dear old Da starts to let things slip about the job he used to hold—people he’s killed, countries he’s overthrown—old work “friends” show up to make sure he stays quiet. Was his grandfather really involved in a world of assassinations and coups, or are the stories just delusions of a crumbling mind? On the run from the police (and possibly something worse) before he has time to find out, Daniel may have to sacrifice everything to protect his grandfather from those who would do him harm.

I can't believe it's time for another WoW and I have three books again this week that I'm really looking forward to. I think these books speak for themselves, I know they each speak to me and have made them books that are on my wishlist. So, you guys tell me what you think of these three? Anyone have their eyes on one or more of these? Tell me what you think in the comments!

The storm is coming . . .

I can't wait for both of these books. I mean, first off... look at these covers!!! Swoon-worthy to say the least. I've heard nothing but amazing praises for Sweet Evil and I'll be picking this one up soon to read. Storm, I haven't seen much talk about this one, but I've been keeping an eye on it for awhile and it just sounds like a must read. I mean four brothers that each can control an element? Yes please! What do you guys think of these two books this week?

HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY TO CLAUDIA & BALTHAZAR!!

Today, I'm happy to welcome Dark Days author Claudia Gray! And to help her celebrate the release day for her new book, BALTHAZAR! Balthazar is a companion novel to her Evernight Series.

As a blogger for the Dark Days tour, today I'm sharing with you the "Biggest" interview
I had a chance to do with Claudia.

Biggest candy craving? If it's chocolate, I want it.

Biggest author moment? Not sure what this means! But I guess nothing quite tops finding out you've sold your first book. I was so shocked I had to sit down on the floor.

Biggest feat you’d like to accomplish? Eventually to have set foot on all seven continents.

Biggest breakthrough when writing a book? Probably it came when I was writing the character of Mateo in the very, very early stages of SPELLCASTER (coming in early 2013); it took his character longer to take shape in my mind, but when he did, he turned out to have an amazing back story. The second-biggest would be while I was writing BALTHAZAR; I'd always found Charity a very difficult character to write in the EVERNIGHT series ... which was all from Bianca's POV. As soon as I was writing about her in a book about Balthazar, though, she suddenly became very easy to write -- I think because he knew her better.

Biggest childhood memory? Probably any happy memory of my pug, Isaac.

Biggest fictional crush? Right now? Professor X! At least as played by James McAvoy. Or as played by Patrick Stewart. Or in comics. Yeah, Professor X.

Biggest wish for one of your characters?
I hope Alec and Tess outwitted the Brotherhood for once and for all after FATEFUL was over. I feel pretty sure they did.

Biggest, most scariest moment? There was a airplane trip from Philadelphia to NYC in a teeny prop plane during a storm that was 45 minutes or pure terror. Lightning, thunder, high winds, turbulence, several sharp dives through the air and all 30 people on board taking turns vomiting or screaming. SO FUN.

Biggest moment of 2011? Probably buying my first house!

Biggest dream trip? That would have to be whatever crazy voyage will finally take me to Antarctica someday.

Biggest challenge ahead of you? I have this crazy idea that I'm going to be able to do my US tour, my Australian tour and the subsequent trip all in two carry-on suitcases. So, packing.

Biggest wish for your fans/readers?
That they always love reading as much as they do right now.

It was such a FUN interview Claudia! I'm thrilled to have had another chance to work with you and host you here on my blog. You are more than welcome back anytime.

Published: AVAILABLE TODAY, from HarperTeen

Skye’s psychic powers have caught the attention of Redgrave, the cruel master vampire responsible for murdering Balthazar and his family four centuries ago. Having learned of Skye’s powers and the remarkable effect her blood has on vampires, he plans to use her for his own evil purposes. Hey guys! How about another amazing cover reveal? Entangled Publishing has been sharing some amazing covers recently and I can't wait to read these amazing sounding books. Here's another one for Pretty Amy.

Title: Pretty Amy
Author: Lisa Burstein
Publisher: Entangled Publishing, May 15th, 2012

Synopsis: Sometimes date is a four-letter word

Amy is fine living in the shadows of beautiful Lila and uber-cool Cassie, because at least she’s somewhat beautiful and uber-cool by association. But when their dates stand them up for prom, and the girls take matters into their own hands—earning them a night in jail outfitted in satin, stilettos, and Spanx—Amy discovers even a prom spent in handcuffs might be better than the humiliating “rehabilitation techniques” now filling up her summer. Worse, with Lila and Cassie parentally banned, Amy feels like she has nothing—like she is nothing.

Navigating unlikely alliances with her new coworker, two very different boys, and possibly even her parents, Amy struggles to decide if it’s worth being a best friend when it makes you a public enemy. Bringing readers along on an often hilarious and heartwarming journey, Amy finds that maybe getting a life only happens once you think your life is over.

Excerpt:

I was just about to put out my cigarette and go back inside when I heard a skateboard coming down the street. It sounded like waves, like a conch shell against your ear. That full, empty sound.

Maybe it was Aaron. I conjured up my stupid daydream, the one I used to fill my head when I couldn’t deal with any of the other stuff in there—that he would find me, that he would apologize, that he would tell me that prom night hadn’t been his fault.

The difference this time was that when I looked toward the sound, he really was there.

        It was him.

        Aaron.

He was skateboarding down the sidewalk like it was made of water, wearing the same loose, worn jeans from his Facebook picture. He carried a backpack, like he might have been coming from the library, but I doubted he ever went to the library.

I lit another cigarette with the end of my last one; any excuse to stay put. Then I remembered I was wearing a suit.

“You got another one of those?” he asked. His eyes were blue. I hadn’t noticed that in his picture.

My hands shook as I gave him a cigarette. He brought a silver-and-black Zippo to his mouth, flipped it open with one hand, lit his cigarette, and slapped it shut. The whole thing took seconds, but it felt like he was doing it in slow motion. “Thanks,” he said.

Maybe he had just stopped to get a cigarette. Maybe it had nothing to do with me.

It probably had nothing to do with me.

“I know you,” he said. “Where do I know you from?”

I couldn’t tell him. Telling him that he’d stood me up for my own prom would have been way too embarrassing. It would tell him that I still cared enough to remember.

“I’m friends with Lila and Cassie,” I said, wishing that my hair wasn’t pulled back in a headband like I was a nun.

“What are you all dressed up for?” he asked.

Of course he didn’t know me. If he had, he would have known that I’d just come from court and that I was trying to do everything I could to forget it.

“I work here,” I said, thinking fast. “I’m supposed to be a librarian.”

“You don’t have to lie,” he said, laughing. “I’m Aaron.”

“Amy,” I said, waving hello with the cigarette in my hand.

He smiled. “Though you do make a cute librarian.”

I tried to keep myself from coughing. “This suit sucks,” I said. It seemed cooler than saying thank you. It seemed cooler than getting all squishy over what he said, even though that was how I felt.

I looked at his skateboard. “You wanna try it out?” he asked.

The deck had a mural of blue sky and white-capped mountains hand-painted on it. The wheels were covered with stop-motion birds, so that when they spun it must have looked like the birds were flying.

There was more to this boy. More that I wanted to know.

“I guess I could,” I said, but then I remembered my mother. She would come looking for me soon.

I shook my head. “I should go.”

“You got a cell phone?” he asked.

“Not that I’m allowed to use anymore.”

“Parents,” he said. He pulled a sketchbook from his backpack. Maybe he had painted that beautiful mural. He ripped out a piece of paper, wrote something down, and handed it to me.

         It was his phone number.

I tried not to act surprised, tried to act like boys gave me their numbers all the time, especially when I hadn’t asked for them.

“See you around, Amy,” he said. He dropped the skateboard next to him. It landed perfectly on its wheels like a cat would on its legs.

As he skated away, I looked at his number; the paper was as soft as fabric. I folded it smaller and smaller and hid it in my bra. Maybe he hadn’t said what I wanted him to say, but he had found me.

         He had found me.

Lisa's Junior Prom Photo
In addition to the PRETTY AMY cover reveal, Entangled Publishing will be hosting a Worst Prom Photo contest in the weeks leading up to AMY's release on May 15. So make sure to dust off your old prom photos—the more tulle, bows, and big hair the better!—and watch Lisa's site, http://www.lisaburstein.com, for details on how to submit/enter to win a beauty package.

Lisa Burstein is a tea seller by day and a writer by night. She wrote her first story when she was in second grade. It was a Thanksgiving tale from the point of view of the turkey from freezer to oven to plate. It was scandalous.

She was a lot like Amy when she was in high school.

She is still a lot like Amy.
